Coal India Q2 Results: Profit Up 53% at ₹6,516 Crore; ₹10.25 Dividend
Coal India Q2 results: net profit rose 53% to ₹6,516 crore on better per-tonne realisation; board declares ₹10.25 dividend, record date 4 November.

Coal India Q2 results showed consolidated net profit growing 53% to ₹6,516 crore in the September quarter. This was driven by higher realisation per tonne. The company also announced a second interim dividend of ₹10.25.
In the corresponding quarter last year, the state-owned miner made a profit of ₹4,259 crore. Revenue from operations increased 21% to ₹44,179 crore from ₹36,553 crore a year earlier. The Coal India board approved the figures after market hours on 29 October.
According to Business Standard, profit after tax was ₹6,547 crore, 57% more than last year’s figure of ₹4,167 crore. That is slightly different from the ₹6,516 crore reported by other outlets. The company attributed the growth to higher per-tonne realisation and other income.
Coal India Q2 results: margins, volumes and realisation
EBITDA increased 29% to ₹8,499 crore from ₹6,593 crore in the previous year. The EBITDA margin rose to 19.24% from 18.04%, and total income grew 21% to ₹46,833 crore.
Coal output increased 4% to 151 million tonnes (mt) in the quarter. Offtake was 12% higher at 186 mt, and volumes sold through e-auctions were 51% higher than last year, according to Business Standard.
Average billing realisation increased 7% to ₹2,346 per tonne from ₹2,186. According to brokerage Nuvama Institutional Equities, e-auction prices were broadly flat year on year, even though the quantity sold through e-auctions rose significantly.
Sequentially, profit came down from around ₹8,850 crore in the June quarter. Revenue was also about 4.5% lower than the ₹46,255 crore posted in that quarter.
Half-year numbers and Coal India dividend
Net profit increased 18% in the first half of FY27 to ₹15,368 crore from ₹13,056 crore. Revenue from operations stood at ₹90,434 crore in the first six months, up 14% from ₹79,472 crore.
The company spent ₹7,966 crore on capex in the first half, a growth of 27% over ₹6,283 crore last year. The capex was 109% of its planned outlay for the period, so it is ahead of plan.
The board approved a second interim dividend of ₹10.25 per share of face value ₹10. The record date is 4 November 2026, and the dividend will be paid on or before 27 November 2026.
Coal India share price and brokerage view
Coal India shares ended at ₹393.1 on the NSE on Thursday, a gain of 0.28%, before the results were announced. On Friday the stock fell as much as 3.3% to ₹380.40 and was trading 1.12% lower at ₹388.75 as of 9:20 am.
Its market capitalisation stood at ₹2.42 lakh crore as of 29 October. The share is down 8% over the last month and is trading well below its 52-week high of ₹491.25, seen on 30 April.
Brokerages remained bullish. Elara Capital reiterated its Buy rating with an unchanged target price of ₹522 and has factored in an annual dividend of ₹26–27 per share, a yield of about 6%. Nuvama also maintained Buy, with a target price of ₹501.
For investors, prices and other income appear to have carried the company this quarter. Interim dividends should keep the stock attractive to income investors, with Elara’s estimate pointing to a yield of around 6%.
Costs will continue to be a concern. According to Nuvama, the company has faced higher diesel and explosives costs linked to the West Asia conflict, along with a wage hike for non-executive staff from July 2026.
The brokerage believes e-auction prices, which have been rising since August, will help December quarter results. “We expect Coal India to deliver 8 per cent volume growth in FY27,” Nuvama said.
Investors will also watch the impact of higher input costs and the pay increase on margins in future quarters. Coal India’s numbers add to a busy earnings season for state-run energy companies; HPCL’s Q2 results showed profit falling 6% despite a record refining margin.
